Start Now: Keeping a Healthy Heart as a Young Adult

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “The early bird catches the worm,” but this can apply to exercise, too. Those who begin exercising at a younger age are more likely to stay healthy longer and keep a healthy heart, especially since they are setting up routines that make them more likely to continue exercising.

A National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute study found a large impact when cardio-respiratory exercises were performed in early adulthood; these exercises significantly reduced the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes by the time participants reached middle age. Keep in mind that both of these diseases often lead to an ever-increasing risk of heart attack or stroke as you age. Standard exercise routines also lower the risk of developing the “spare tire” body shape and high triglyceride levels (“bad” cholesterol).

Many young people believe because they are currently healthy, exercise is not necessary, but that is far from the truth. It is always beneficial to begin exercising when you’re young, since minimal effort as a young adult can keep you from dealing with maximum consequences of a sedentary lifestyle by the time you reach middle age. Also, you might feel like you can eat whatever you choose for now, but that pizza and ice cream will catch up to you as high blood pressure after a certain age.

You might have heard your parents say that hitting 30 meant they no longer instantly recovered from any food-related binge. Excess eating (along with watching large amounts of TV) add up to extra weight in fat, diabetes, hypertension, and other health issues, which may require frequent trips to the doctor and a variety of medications. Although your 30s and 40s may seem distant, you’ll be surprised how fast time flies – the next time you turn around, you’ll be knocking on the door of 50! When the diet doesn’t work, most people’s immediate reaction is to cut back on their food intake, which sounds pretty simple. According to most magazine and Internet diet or eating plans, eating smaller portions is the number one step. If you have experience diets that don’t work, you know that the most effective way to lose weight long-term is to avoid fatty foods and exercise regularly. Without exercise, dieting is futile, because any weight you lose will immediately come back as soon as you stop dieting. The inactive lifestyle chosen by most of us is a large contributor to the growing number of overweight people worldwide. Ease of travel, desk jobs, and foods rich in fat have generated unpredictable patterns of weight gain – like anything, the ease of modern life has a price.
